How to Wear a Double-Breasted Jacket: The Complete Guide

The double-breasted chalk stripe suit standing on the mannequin at the atelier is, to my mind, the most persuasive garment in the house. Button it and look in the mirror: the shoulders are wider, the waist narrower and the man two centimetres taller, all without a single movement on his part. The only thing it asks in return is that you know how to wear a double-breasted jacket.

The double-breasted did not come back yesterday. In 2026 it is once again the principal order of the autumn, and the reason is simple: when everybody around is in sweaters and weatherproof jackets, a coat with two rows of buttons looks like a decision. Let us look at where it came from, how it is built and what to wear it with, so that it reads as a duke rather than as a rental.

Where the double-breasted jacket came from

The two rows of buttons came from the sea. The peacoats of Dutch and British sailors fastened on either side so the front was always closed to the wind, and by the end of the nineteenth century the principle had passed to the frock coat and then to the jacket. In the thirties the double-breasted suit became the garment of the Duke of Windsor: he wore it with soft shoulders and a wide lapel, and half the world copied him, Hollywood included.

Why did the double-breasted turn into the uniform of a Wall Street banker in the eighties. Why did it nearly vanish in the two thousands along with the tie. Why is it worn now with a rollneck and jeans. Because every era takes from it what it needs: the eighties needed armour, the two thousands needed freedom, and we need a garment that makes the whole outfit on its own.

How a double-breasted jacket is built

The number that matters is the buttons. The classic is called six-on-two: six buttons at the front, of which two fasten, the middle and the lower, while the top pair is decorative. The four-on-two is shorter and quieter, chosen by men for whom six is too many. The four-on-one, with a low fastening, lengthens the line and has always been favoured in Naples.

The lapel on a double-breasted is always peaked, and it is wide: a narrow lapel on a double-breasted looks as though the jacket shrank in the wash. Inside there is a detail few people know: a small button on the inner side of the front, the jigger. It holds the inner front so the jacket does not wrinkle over the stomach. When it is missing, the jacket is a factory imitation.

And the rule most often broken: a double-breasted jacket is not unbuttoned. Never, not even seated. Open, it loses its shape and hangs in two panels. That is exactly why it has to sit with ease at the waist, so that you can sit down and eat with it fastened.

What to wear it with

With suit trousers and a tie it is the most formal thing in a wardrobe after black tie. A navy double-breasted suit with a white shirt replaces a dinner jacket wherever the invitation says cocktail, and beats any single-breasted at a negotiation.

With a rollneck it is the look of recent seasons, and it works for one reason: a fine rollneck removes the collar and the tie, and the wide lapel becomes the only line across the chest. The rollneck must be fine, in merino or cashmere, navy, grey or black. A thick sweater under a double-breasted turns it into a peacoat.

With jeans and loafers the double-breasted jacket is worn away from its trousers, and one thing matters: the jeans straight, dark and without distressing, and the jacket in a cloth with texture, flannel, tweed or cotton. A smooth worsted jacket with jeans reads as a suit that has lost its trousers.

With a knitted polo in summer, on a terrace or on an evening by the sea, in a linen and wool jacket. The polo is buttoned to the top and the collar does not go over the lapel.

Cloth and fit

For a double-breasted suit we take Vitale Barberis Canonico Super 130's and Loro Piana: smooth, with a clean colour, so that a stripe or a plain navy reads from a distance. For a jacket worn away from its trousers it is the opposite, cloth with texture: Drago flannel, tweed, cotton and wool. Chalk stripe on a double-breasted is a genre of its own; it lengthens the line and gives the jacket back what it was in the thirties.

The fit. The shoulder is slightly wider than on a single-breasted, but without eighties padding. The length should cover the trouser pockets and not a centimetre more. The sleeve shows a centimetre and a half of cuff. Fastened, the jacket must not pull across the stomach or wrinkle at the back: if it pulls, the button will not help, the size will. This is where ready-made clothing struggles most with the double-breasted, and it is why it is more often made to measure.

Double-breasted at ATELIER 23

At the atelier on Avenida da Liberdade there are finished double-breasted jackets and suits in Loro Piana, Vitale Barberis Canonico and Zegna cloths, and made to measure in any length on our table. They are made at our own workshop in the Serra da Estrela in four to six weeks with one fitting. At that fitting a double-breasted jacket is checked buttoned and seated: it is the only way to see whether the waist and the length are right.

If this is a first double-breasted, begin with plain navy, six on two. It replaces a dinner jacket at a cocktail, a suit at a negotiation and a sports coat at dinner. The second one can be striped.
