Why made to measure
A suit that follows you, from the collar down
Ready-made suits are cut for a standard figure that very few men have. One shoulder sits a little lower, the arms are longer than the chest size assumes, and a man who stands straight needs a different back from one who leans slightly forward.
A tailor sees this in the first minutes of the appointment and cuts the pattern around it. The result is quiet: the collar stays against the shirt when you turn your head, the sleeve shows a finger of cuff, the trousers fall cleanly onto the shoe. People tell you that you look well. They rarely notice that the suit is new.
Your pattern stays with us. The second suit is a matter of choosing the cloth.

How a made-to-measure suit is made in Lisbon

Day 1 · 1 hour
First appointment
We take your measurements, watch how you stand and move, and you try on fitting jackets so we can see size and balance on you. Then we choose the cloth, lapels, buttons and lining together. You are welcome to leave without ordering that day.

Made at our workshop
Your individual pattern is cut and the suit is made at our own workshop in the Serra da Estrela, a few hours' drive from Lisbon.
Week 5 · 45 min
The fitting
About 45 minutes. The tailor checks the shoulders, the balance, sleeve and trouser length, and marks the details. One fitting is all it takes, and the final adjustments follow within days.
By week 6
Ready to wear
You collect the suit at the atelier, or we send it anywhere in the world, free of charge. After a few weeks of wear we ask how it feels, and what you tell us goes into your pattern.

Construction
What is inside a tailored jacket
Under the cloth of a good jacket there is a canvas. It gives the chest its shape and lets it move with you, and over the years it settles to your figure.
Our suits have a full canvas front and lapels stitched by hand, so the lapel rolls softly towards the button. The white tacking you see here holds everything in place until the jacket is sewn up and pressed.

Every made-to-measure suit is cut and sewn in Portugal and comes back to Lisbon for the fitting. Production is a few hours from the atelier, and that is why four weeks is enough.
Cloth
Cloth you choose by hand
At the atelier we keep the current books of the Italian and English houses. You see the cloth in daylight, feel its weight and watch how it falls before deciding, and the tailor tells you which one suits a Lisbon summer, an office winter or a suit you will wear every week.

Visiting Lisbon
A tailor in Lisbon for clients who travel
Many of our clients do not live in Lisbon. Grooms have flown in from London and Brasília to marry in Portugal. A made-to-measure suit needs two visits, and the second can be planned around your next trip.

What clients ask before ordering
How long does a made-to-measure suit take?
Four to six weeks from the first appointment, with one fitting. The suit takes about four weeks at our workshop, then comes the fitting and the final adjustments. For a wedding we plan five to eight weeks to keep a margin before the day.
How many fittings will I need?
One. The measurements and the fitting jackets at the first appointment tell the tailor most of what he needs, so the fitting is about the last details: sleeve length, the break of the trousers, the way the jacket closes.
How much does a made-to-measure suit cost in Lisbon?
From €1,500 in Reda cloth. Loro Piana, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Scabal and other cloths cost more. The price is confirmed at the atelier once the cloth and model are chosen.
What is the difference between made to measure and bespoke?
A bespoke suit is drafted from a blank paper pattern and usually takes two or three fittings over several months. Made to measure starts from a proven pattern that the tailor adjusts to your measurements and posture, which is why it takes weeks and a single fitting. At Atelier 23 you end up with your own pattern, kept for the next order.
Is it worth it compared with a ready-made suit?
A ready-made suit usually needs alterations, and some things cannot be altered at all: the width of the shoulders, the length of the jacket, the balance of the back. Made to measure builds them in from the start, in the cloth you chose, and the next suit is ordered by choosing a cloth.
What if the suit does not fit?
That is what the fitting is for. The tailor marks every adjustment on you, the corrections are made within days, and you take the suit home when it sits as it should.
I don't live in Lisbon. Can I still order?
Yes. Plan two visits: the first appointment and the fitting about four weeks later. After that you can collect the suit or we send it anywhere in the world, with free delivery.
Do I have to order at the first appointment?
No. Many clients come first to see the cloths and talk it through. The appointment takes about an hour and commits you to nothing.
What else can be made to measure?
Suits and three-piece suits, jackets from €1,000, overcoats from €1,200, trousers and tuxedos. Shirts are made to measure in Naples, from €350.
Can you embroider my initials?
Yes, inside the jacket, at no extra cost. We discuss it at the first appointment.
