A New Presence in Lisbon That Starts by Listening

Some tailoring houses in Lisbon have been open for more than a hundred years. ATELIER 23 is not one of them, and does not try to sound like one. Recently opened on Avenida da Liberdade, the approach is different: a well-built suit does not need to come with the tailor's opinion attached.

Listening Before Cutting

Most traditional tailoring houses work from a fixed idea of what is "correct": a certain cut, a certain lapel, a certain way of dressing. It works well for clients who want exactly that aesthetic. It works badly for clients who do not.

A client described, during one of the first fittings in Lisbon, an experience with a well-regarded tailor in the north of England. He asked for a simple, modern navy suit. He was told, in essence, that this was not how things were done there, and that the house's traditional cut was what he would be getting, agreement or not. He had the money. He did not have the patience for someone else's opinion imposed on his own wardrobe. He left without ordering anything.

At A23 he found what he had been looking for from the start: a suit classic in construction, built around what he wanted to wear, not around what the tailor thought he should wear.

Classic in Construction, Not in Attitude

This does not mean giving up technical rigor. A23's suits are made at the atelier's own workshop in Serra da Estrela, with hand-sewn full canvas construction and master tailors with more than thirty years of experience, the same technical foundation as any traditional house. The difference is in the process: the first conversation is not about convincing the client of an aesthetic, it is about understanding what he already knows he wants, and building from there.

What we bring, and what we do not do

ATELIER 23 opened in Moscow in 2014. That is more than ten years of dressing people who spend the day in meetings, on planes and at a dinner in the evening, and who have no patience for a garment that demands attention. The practice we brought to Lisbon is that one, not one invented for the occasion.

In a conversation it comes down to four concrete things. The price is fixed at the consultation and does not move afterwards. We see clients seven days a week, by appointment, because a man passing through Lisbon rarely has a free Wednesday. There is a fitting halfway, not an inspection at the end. And the pattern is kept under your name, which is what makes a second order possible from anywhere.

It is worth saying what we do not do, before anyone has to ask. We do not do bespoke in the strict Savile Row sense: the pattern is not drafted from scratch on paper and there are not four fittings across six months. We do made to measure, with a full canvas sewn by hand, and the difference between the two methods is set out in bespoke or made to measure. We do not have a house cut to impose on whoever walks in. And we do not quote a price that later turns out to have supplements.

A23 works by appointment on Avenida da Liberdade, open seven days a week, unusual among the city's older tailoring houses, which tend to keep more traditional hours. Between suit and shirt fittings, the goal stays simple: a wardrobe classic enough to last, modern enough to be his own.
