The Full Story — Cloth, Collar & Fit
The cloth is a fine Italian cotton, and the collar, the cuff and the body are the three decisions that decide whether a shirt is worn or left on the hanger. A cotton denim shirt is the one that turns a suit into something worn on a Friday, and the one that works with flannel trousers and no jacket at all. The weave is heavier than a poplin, so the collar holds its shape without a stiff interlining.
The collar is the part that shows above a jacket for the whole day, and it is the part a ready-to-wear shirt gets wrong most often: a neck measurement is one number, and a neck is not. On a made to measure shirt the collar height, the spread and the point length are set to the face and the shoulders they sit under.
Mother-of-pearl buttons, cut from shell rather than moulded from resin. They are heavier, they catch light differently, and they survive a laundry that resin buttons do not.
Twelve to fifteen measurements, plus the notes on posture. The first order confirms the pattern; after that it is kept under your name and repeat shirts are ordered from anywhere, without a fitting.
