What Is Made to Measure, and Why Lisbon?
Made to measure is the middle path between off-the-rack and fully bespoke. A pattern is cut to your individual measurements — shoulders, chest, waist, seat, trouser break — rather than adjusted from a standard size. The result is a suit that fits from the first wearing, with no need for the compromises that come with buying a suit off a shelf.
Lisbon has become an unexpected destination for this kind of craft. Portugal's textile industry has deep roots — Serra da Estrela, the country's highest mountain range, has been producing fine wool for centuries. Labour costs are lower than London or Naples, which means a suit that would cost €4,000–€6,000 on Savile Row can be commissioned here for €900–€2,000 without any sacrifice in construction quality.
At ATELIER 23, we work by appointment from our atelier on Avenida da Liberdade 110 — Lisbon's main luxury boulevard. We are open seven days a week, including weekends, which matters if you are visiting Lisbon for a few days and want to make use of your time.
The Process: From First Appointment to Final Fitting
Step 1 — The Consultation
We begin with a conversation, not a measuring tape. What is the suit for? A wedding, a board meeting, a regular rotation in your wardrobe? This takes thirty to forty-five minutes and costs nothing.
Step 2 — Fabric Selection
We stock fabrics from Loro Piana, Scabal, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil, and Zegna Baruffa (Cashwool®). Super 120s to 150s wools for year-round suiting. Linen blends for Lisbon summers. We will explain the differences plainly — you will touch each fabric and understand what it will look and feel like in regular wear.
Step 3 — Measurements
We take over twenty measurements: jacket length, chest, waist suppression, seat, sleeve pitch, trouser rise, inseam. We also note posture — one shoulder lower than the other, a forward lean, a strong back. These are the details that separate a suit that fits from one that merely covers.
Step 4 — Production at Serra da Estrela
Your suit is made at our workshop in Serra da Estrela by master tailors with over thirty years of experience. Full canvas construction — the structure of the jacket is built from floating horsehair canvas stitched to the wool, not glued. This is the same construction used by the great Neapolitan houses. It means the jacket moulds to your body over time and does not delaminate after dry cleaning.
Step 5 — Fitting and Delivery
After six to eight weeks, you return for a fitting. Minor adjustments are made on the spot. Final delivery follows within a week. If you are only in Lisbon briefly, we can arrange shipping worldwide.

We work weekends. Most Lisbon ateliers are closed Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday. We are open seven days. If you are visiting Lisbon for a long weekend, we can see you.
We are English-speaking. Consultations in English, Russian, Portuguese, or Spanish.

Full canvas construction, standard. Many "made to measure" services in this price range use fused interfacing. We do not. Full canvas is non-negotiable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a made to measure suit take in Lisbon?
At ATELIER 23, production takes six to eight weeks. We can ship the completed suit worldwide if you have left Lisbon.
Is made to measure the same as bespoke?
Not quite. Bespoke means a completely individual pattern drafted from scratch — typically three or more fittings over several months, and a significantly higher cost. Made to measure uses a base pattern adjusted to your measurements. The fit is excellent; the process is faster and more affordable.
Can I visit on a Saturday or Sunday?
Yes. We are open seven days a week by appointment. Saturday and Sunday consultations are available at the same times as weekdays.
Do you make tuxedos and formal wear?
Yes. Black Tie is a specialty — tuxedos starting at €1,500 in classic black wool. Ivory shawl lapel and peak lapel options available.
What fabrics are available?
Loro Piana, Scabal, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil, Zegna Baruffa (Cashwool®), and Portuguese wools from Serra da Estrela. Weight ranges from 220g/m² (summer) to 340g/m² (winter).
