What Is Made to Measure, and Why Lisbon?

Made to measure is the middle path between off-the-rack and fully bespoke. A pattern is cut to your individual measurements — shoulders, chest, waist, seat, trouser break — rather than adjusted from a standard size. The result is a suit that fits from the first wearing, with no need for the compromises that come with buying a suit off a shelf.

Lisbon has become an unexpected destination for this kind of craft. Portugal's textile industry has deep roots — Serra da Estrela, the country's highest mountain range, has been producing fine wool for centuries. Labour costs are lower than London or Naples, which means a suit that would cost €4,000–€6,000 on Savile Row can be commissioned here from €1,500 without any sacrifice in construction quality.

At ATELIER 23, we work by appointment from our atelier on Avenida da Liberdade 110 — Lisbon's main luxury boulevard. We are open seven days a week, including weekends, which matters if you are visiting Lisbon for a few days and want to make use of your time.

The process, week by week

From the first phone call to delivery is four to six weeks. The calendar is always the same, and it is this one.

1. Day 0, about an hour. The consultation on Avenida da Liberdade: what the suit is for, the cloth, and about twenty measurements. You leave with a fixed price and two dates in the diary. What happens across that hour, in detail, is in your first appointment, step by step.
2. Weeks 1 to 6. Cutting and making at the workshop in the Serra da Estrela. Full canvas sewn by hand through the whole jacket: horsehair and linen needled to the wool, never glued. That is what takes the time, and it is why the chest follows the body over the years instead of bubbling after the first dry clean.
3. Week 6 or 7. The fitting in Lisbon, with the shirt and the shoes you will wear. We look at the chest roll, the shoulder line and the break of the trouser. Adjustments are chalked and made straight after.
4. Week 7 or 8. Delivery. We ship to any address if you have already left the country.
5. Afterwards. The pattern is kept under your name with the fitting notes. The next order can be placed by message, without returning to Lisbon, and it is worth repeating a fitting every five years or whenever your weight changes appreciably.

Cloths come from Loro Piana, Scabal, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil and Vitale Barberis Canonico, plus Portuguese wools from the Serra da Estrela, in weights from 220 g/m² for summer to 340 g/m² for winter.

The price is given at the consultation and does not change afterwards. There is no cloth supplement discovered halfway, no fitting fee and no extras at delivery. Finished garments in the catalogue carry their own prices.

Why ATELIER 23, Specifically

We work weekends. Most Lisbon ateliers are closed Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday. We are open seven days. If you are visiting Lisbon for a long weekend, we can see you.

We are English-speaking. Consultations in English, Russian, Portuguese, or Spanish.

The factory is in Portugal. Our workshop in Serra da Estrela — two hours from Lisbon. Master tailors with thirty-plus years of experience. Not outsourced.

Full canvas construction, standard. Many "made to measure" services in this price range use fused interfacing. We do not. Full canvas is non-negotiable.
