Size guide: shirt
Your shirt size is your neck circumference in centimetres.
| Collar size | 38 | 39 | 40 | 41 | 42 | 43 | 44 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neck, cm | 38 | 39 | 40 | 41 | 42 | 43 | 44 |
| Usual size | S | M | M | L | L | XL | XL |
Measure your neck at the base with a finger under the tape, then add 1 cm so the collar closes comfortably.

The Full Story — Cloth, Collar & Fit
The cloth is a fine Italian cotton, and the collar, the cuff and the body are the three decisions that decide whether a shirt is worn or left on the hanger. White is the one shirt that is judged entirely on fit, because there is no pattern and no colour to distract the eye — which is exactly why a badly cut white shirt is so visible.
The collar is the part that shows above a jacket for the whole day, and it is the part a ready-to-wear shirt gets wrong most often: a neck measurement is one number, and a neck is not. On a made to measure shirt the collar height, the spread and the point length are set to the face and the shoulders they sit under.
Mother-of-pearl buttons, cut from shell rather than moulded from resin. They are heavier, they catch light differently, and they survive a laundry that resin buttons do not.
Twelve to fifteen measurements, plus the notes on posture. The first order confirms the pattern; after that it is kept under your name and repeat shirts are ordered from anywhere, without a fitting.
