Gelong Wool: The Cashmere Alternative Worth Knowing
Cashmere has a problem. It is extraordinary to wear — fine, light, warm in a way heavier materials cannot replicate — but it is not built to last. The fibres of the cashmere goat's undercoat are among the finest in the natural world, and that fineness comes at a cost: pilling within a season, thinning at the elbows, gradual loss of the softness that justified the price.
Gelong wool is a different answer to the same question.
Where Gelong Wool Comes From
The Geelong region of Victoria, southeastern Australia, has produced fine merino wool since the nineteenth century. Specific grassland, climate, and generations of selective breeding have produced animals with fleece of exceptional fineness — measuring in the same micron range as high-grade cashmere, while retaining the structural integrity of wool rather than the fragility of goat fibre.
SuperGelong — the grade used by Zegna Baruffa in the yarn we specify for our knitwear — is taken from the finest selection of this already fine clip. The fibre diameter eliminates the prickling sensation that puts some people off wool entirely, while the natural scale structure gives it the resilience and memory that cashmere lacks.
Gelong vs Cashmere: The Honest Comparison
Cashmere is softer on first contact. There is no dispute about this. But Gelong comes close enough that the difference is negligible in daily use — while outperforming cashmere on every durability measure. A Gelong sweater worn regularly will not pill the way cashmere does. It holds shape through washing. After five years of proper use, it looks more like itself than a comparable cashmere garment would. For a garment you intend to wear seriously, Gelong is the more rational choice.

How to Wear It
Gelong knitwear works across the full range of contexts: under a suit jacket, over a shirt in a restaurant, alone with good trousers. The muted palette — grey, navy, beige — means the sweater never competes with other pieces. In Lisbon's climate, a Gelong sweater covers roughly eight months of the year. It earns its place in a suitcase.
Care
Hand wash at 30°C, reshape damp, dry flat. Gelong is more forgiving than cashmere — the fibre has more natural resilience — but avoid heat, wringing, and the tumble dryer.
