Black Classic Suit

Cut from Vitale Barberis Canonico Super 130s, woven in Biella, in the same Italian mill that supplies most of the houses this atelier is measured against. Super 130s is the point where a cloth is fine enough to drape rather than sit, and still dense enough to hold a crease through a full day. The finish is matte. Sheen in a business suit reads as effort.

A black suit is the one most men own last and reach for at the least convenient moment: a funeral, a board meeting called at short notice, an evening where a dinner jacket would be too much and navy too casual. It earns its place by being ready rather than by being worn often.

The peak lapel is what separates this from a plain black two-button. It lifts the shoulder line and gives the jacket a formality that a notch lapel does not have, which is exactly why it works after six in the evening as well as before.

Construction is full canvas: horsehair and cotton stitched by hand between the cloth and the lining, never bonded with adhesive. A fused jacket looks correct on the first day and stiff by the third month; a canvassed one softens into the shoulders it belongs to and fits better in year two than it did in week one. Everything is made at our own workshop in the Serra da Estrela, not assembled on a line.
