Grey Suit, Super 130s Italian Wool

The cloth is Vitale Barberis Canonico Super 130s, woven in Italy to a fineness that lets the wool drape rather than sit stiffly on the body. At this weight the grey reads neither cold nor flat under different light — closer to graphite than to concrete — and it holds a crease through long days without ever feeling armored. The hand is soft enough to notice the first time it's worn, and still holding its shape years later.

Every A23 suit, this one included, is built full canvas by hand at the atelier's own workshop in Serra da Estrela: horsehair and cotton stitched, not glued, between the shell and the lining. It is the construction method that lets a jacket move with the shoulders instead of against them, and the reason a canvassed suit looks better after two years of wear than it did new — the cloth learns the body instead of resisting it.

Cut with a natural shoulder and enough room through the chest to sit correctly buttoned or open, the silhouette is deliberately unshowy. Two buttons, peak lapels, flap pockets. Nothing about it is designed to be noticed on its own; it is designed to let whoever wears it be the one who's noticed.

As with every piece from A23, later adjustments — waist, sleeve, shoulder — remain simple work because the canvas and seam allowances were built for it from the start. Clients in Lisbon are welcome to have those first corrections made in person at Avenida da Liberdade before the suit is finished; everyone else receives the same cloth, cut, and hand construction wherever they are.

Grey's real advantage shows up in pairing, not in the suit alone. It takes white, blue, pink, and even patterned shirts without any of them looking out of place, and it wears equally well with black or brown shoes — a flexibility navy doesn't quite match, since navy tends to insist on black in the evening and struggles slightly with brown in strong daylight. For a client narrowing a wardrobe down to two or three suits rather than expanding it endlessly, grey is usually the one worn most, precisely because it argues with the least.

Longevity depends on care as much as construction. Dry clean or steam only — never machine wash — and store on a shaped wooden hanger inside a breathable garment bag rather than a plastic sleeve, which traps moisture and flattens the shoulder over time.
